So this is it. I am a 4th grade teacher, responsible for a class of 14 nine- and ten-year old masterminds. Today was day one, and already my kids have amazed me.
Last week, while planning, it hit me that much of what I want to do with my students, primarily my classroom management system, might be too difficult or complex for 4th grade. While I was spending hours decorating my classroom with smiling little monkeys and covering bulletin boards (something at which I have almost NO ability), I couldn’t suppress the feeling that I am naturally much more apt to be teaching older students. I was originally placed teaching high school English, and although I do believe that I am exactly where I am supposed to be, I couldn’t stay away from the hypotheticals.
